thisrecording:

Some lines landed on the audience not so much with a thud as with the nervous through-the-nose exhale people reserve for New Yorker cartoons, or unfunny friends whose feelings they don’t want to hurt. “What was that?” asked the woman behind me as the credits rolled. “Whose idea was that movie?”

Damsels in Distress. I will concede to never having seen a Whit Stillman movie and so maybe I just wasn’t prepared for it, but I got to see a screening a few weeks back and I did not care for the movie. I tried. There were eccentricities/quirks that had their charm (a college age boy who is only just learning his colors, for example) but overall I think its the sort of movie that needed another polish or two before shooting. It just kind of rambles along with some semblance of cohesion. I got really bothered by some of the technical aspects of it. It felt kind of lazily slapped together when it came to the cinematography and editing.
This movie is also the only time I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed Aubrey Plaza, it loses many points for that.

: Your Favorite Movie Sucks: 2001: A Space Odyssey

dangatorium:

by Sean Mannion

… blah blah blah movie …

It’s Kubrick’s insistence on constantly slapping us in the face with his enormous cinematic penis.

… blah blah blah movie …

While I enjoy the rest of my inane babbling about why 2001 sucks, that’s really the sentence that makes this new column for me.

Your Favorite Movie Sucks: Star Wars

dangatorium:

Star-Wars-Sucks

I wrote a column for Dangatorium.com it is, hopefully, the first of many where I attack people’s favorite movies. It’s a humor site so do approach my questionable writing skills with that in mind. To be fair, I will probably also throw my own favorite movie under the bus soon. Please feel free to tell me your favorite movie, so I have fodder for future columns.

So I Put up an Indiegogo...

deadandimmortal:

Hey everybody,

The thing I hate the most about filmmaking is funding. I’m running around like mad currently trying to still attend class, work on making this filmy podcast work, and also try to get two last films off the ground before I finish school.

The projects involve quite a few tumblr folks in some sort of capacity. The films that I’m trying to do are, in many ways, being made by this community right hurr!

And I think if I can make them work (IE match them to the ideas that are in my head), I think these could be wonderful films. As it states on the indiegogo page, these two films have very much become sister films. Both deal with ideas and constructions of communities. I would argue that they’ve kind of become presentations of very different views (one more of an assimilationist piece, the other more of a separatist piece).

So, check out the Indiegogo page. It says I’m looking for $500, but I’m only really looking for $200. Any money after that will either go to the films (because I haven’t figured out a real budget!) or be held on for my full length film that I’m also in the process of working on. Any questions feel free to ask. This is a very DIY project.

Also, any folks in or around Michigan interested in acting, I’m still looking for one more actress. I wouldn’t be able to drive you or anything, but if you’re interested or local (preferably interested), we can talk.

Thank you so much for letting me talk about money, which is a silly thing to talk about.

Came across this post. Looks like a good project. They’re currently at $215. Good thing about Indiegogo is that even if they don’t hit their $500 goal, they’ll stil get whatever money they raised to make their films (the all or nothing nature of Kickstarter is something I’m conflicted about, it has positives and negatives, I’m glad Indiegogo exists as an alternative). Still, it would be nice to see them hit that $500 goal.

I don’t post about it enough but I love seeing people go out and do what they love with the help of places like Indiegogo and Kickstarter (and whatever else is out there). I don’t even care what people are making (most of the time), just that they are getting out there and doing it is the bees knees.
