Settling In

Jess has been here about a week and a half and I’ve been here about 6 weeks now and we’re settling into our new surroundings rather nicely. The apartment is starting to look less like we’re moving in and more like we’re living here, though, we still have a lot to do before it’s really like home.

We’ve got our living room furniture mostly setup. Two comfortable cheap Ikea chairs and a nice little green couch all pointed in the general direction of our TV which pipes hot media to our brains. The bedroom is probably halfway done. We’ve got our bed setup and we’ve got a nice matching dresser but we still await Jess’ bookshelves getting shipped to us and we’re evaluating our need for a wardrobe or something like that as we’re lacking some closet space. We haven’t really done anything with the office yet, which is fine since that’s probably the lowest priority. The kitchen awaits the arrival of cooking implements other than the new griddle and spatula, which has resulted in much breakfast for lunch and dinner (and … breakfast).

The cats are doing fine. They alternate between running around the house like someone set their asses on fire and sleeping the day away. Emma, the adorable horrible kitten that’s not a kitten anymore, seems to tolerate me a lot more. She even comes and curls up next to me on the couch when I’m working during the day. This is quite different from her former policy of avoiding me 90% of the time.

Speaking of work, my fantastic idea for switching to part-time hourly through the end of the year is not quite that fantastic. Pretty much as soon as I moved they scaled me back from a couple of things that would have kept me busy through the end of the year. Now, days are a bit hit or miss with some work that needs my attention but not quite enough to fill the part-time day without a little padding of the numbers. This wouldn’t have been so bad if I was still salaried. Being hourly they only pay me for the work I do. So, just being available doesn’t really get me paid.

Not that that’s going to send us to the poorhouse right now it’s just a bit frustrating. My desire not to do any work at all most days certainly doesn’t help. Only 1 month left in working for the company, though, then it’s off to school and, hopefully, by this time next year I’ll be writing about having sold a script.
