Made it!/NYC Day 1
Well, I’ve made it to New York. Now, begins juggling part-time work, apartment hunting, and learning the finer points of living here.
The trip here wasn’t bad. I hate traveling. I enjoy going to different places but getting there generally just does not do it for me. I hate planes and I hate airports. This trip went unbelievably well, though.
My air travel was surprisingly low stress. I had no trouble with TSA, despite the threats of Mr. Garry “Sneakyparrot,” the plane arrived on time and boarding wasn’t much of a hassle. I was able to nap through most of the first flight to Seattle, which arrived 20 minutes early. I was thrilled because my next flight was due to begin boarding approximately an hour after our scheduled arrival and my own experience, as well as the various warnings I received over the past week, suggested that I would need to haul ass to another terminal far off from my arrival gate. Unfortunately, the 20 minute advantage was sort of lost because we had to hang out for a bit for a gate to open up. Still, the noodly appendage of FSM seemed to be working in my favor yesterday as when I went to look up the gate I had to get to for my flight to Newark I discovered that it was the same gate I had arrived at. I didn’t have to go anywhere. The trip to Newark was even better, I napped pretty much the entire way (probably awake for about 30-45 minutes at the end) then we landed about an hour earlier than scheduled. Best experience with airline travel (aside from the one time I flew first class on Saudi Air) ever.
Once I arrived in Newark I still had some ways to go. I’d received some extremely helpful directions on how to get to my new lodgings from roommate Audacia Ray and I took to following them immediately. I rode a rather full train from Newark to Penn Station in Manhattan. In Penn Station I meandered, probably looking very lost to anyone who bothered to look, until I found the Subway Station, bought a couple of rides on a Metro card and got on the first of three subway lines. I was only supposed to do two.
I managed to get on the right line the first time, unusual for me, though likely more due to the directions I received than my own cleverness. Then, I kind of fucked up the second one. I got on the express line. Luckily, I was paying enough attention to watch my intended stop zip by. I got off at the next stop and took the same line going in the opposite direction, this time I made sure it wasn’t the express. I got to the right subway station, but I got out on the wrong side. For you see, my friends, this station has two exits on the opposite sides of a highway. So, rather than coming out right in front of Audacia’s building, I emerged somewhere where I did not know where I was. I meandered a bit and consulted the all seeing eye of the iPhone and managed to discover the building.
I met new roommate Audacia Ray for the first time, she is very damn cool and has been very welcoming and friendly. We went and had a burger at a place called Flipsters (I think, I neglected to write it down) it was a very tasty burger and the restaurant itself had a nice feel to it. Attention Cheezburger Squad members: this place is good, not cheap, but damn that was a tasty burger, someone tell Garry to email me a Squad Log Spreadsheet so I can fill it out for this place.
After burgers I tagged along to a Jazz thingie (yes thingie, I don’t know what to call it I’m not cultured like that) at a place called Smalls, which I am informed would make me very excited if I were really into Jazz. As it stands I kind of dig Jazz but, like most music, I really don’t know enough to make an educated assessment of any of it. I didn’t hate what I heard last night but I didn’t particularly like it either. I was instructed afterward, however, that the music being played last night “sucked.” Still, I had fun going out and meeting new people and seeing new places that I likely would never have even considered going to before.
So, Day 1 was very exciting and very full and, I think, a very good start to the new life in New York.
