Don’t Vote for this Show (Channel 101 Pilot)
Thank you to those who took the title far too literally and didn’t vote for the show. This was not a narrative show, so had this made prime time, that would have been indicative of the very problems it was addressing. I didn’t want to see more shows like this in prime time than we already had. Also, thank you to those who...
Screenwriting Tip #916
screenwritingtips:
Don’t set up an urgent goal, then show us the protagonist doing ordinary things for the remainder of Act One. Doing her laundry/taxes/regular job before the inciting incident is fine, and may help reveal character. After the inciting incident, it’s a waste of the audience’s time.

Where idea go?
Sometimes I’m overflowing with ideas and jotting all sorts of shit down. Then, there are times like this last week (maybe longer) where my brain feels like a movie theater with a busted projector. Every now and again half an idea flickers across the screen. Then, a whole idea appears but fades before I realize what it is.
My brain meat feels faulty right now. Where did my ideas go? Need to...

Screenwriting Tip #909
screenwritingtips:
Don’t fight your influences — use them. If you want to emulate the style of your favorite screenwriter, go ahead. If you make it even halfway there, you’ll be halfway to writing like a professional screenwriter.
Steal. If you like it, steal it. (Probably not what this is saying but it’s what I’m saying).

Brainstorming & My Wife
I love that I can be sitting around trying to brainstorm while doing laundry, then Jess and I start texting and in less than 20 minutes, just from kicking ideas between us and being silly, I suddenly have exactly the kind of idea I’ve been looking for. Good times.
When I get home I’m going to spend the rest of the day watching David Lynch movies and writing down as many crazy ideas...
Screenwriting Tip #908
screenwritingtips:
Pure, unrepentant antiheroes are fun to write, but self-reflective ones are even better. If they know that what they’re doing is wrong, you get a free source of internal conflict.

– As Other Crimes Recede, Police Crack Down on Street Prostitution - NYTimes.com
1. I didn’t copy it here because I don’t want to keep the language in circulation, but the lede of this article is horribly transmisogynistic and refers to “men dressed as women” and also creates a lurid picture of...

So, tomorrow, you should check this out. I’m helping with the technical stuff for streaming the panel discussion. 6PM EST. Take an hour to watch this before you go to the bar to drown your loneliness with Pabst and that over-priced, heart-shaped box of chocolates from the convenience store with the greasy clerk who rubs his nipple whenever he thinks you’re not looking.
Here’s...

Hey everybody,
The thing I hate the most about filmmaking is funding. I’m running around like mad currently trying to still attend class, work on making this filmy podcast work, and also try to get two last films off the ground before I finish school.
The projects involve quite a few tumblr folks in some sort of capacity. The films that I’m trying to do are, in many ways,...

Stuff on my Dashboard
So, I’m skimming through my Tumblr dashboard this morning, because I have things I should be doing but fuck that (for serious, who wants to do shit when they can page through thousands of gifs made from popular TV shows and movies). So, I notice I “missed” the Grammys last night (I don’t really listen to new music … also, fuck masturbatory industry awards shows). Two...
Screenwriting Tip #902
screenwritingtips:
When is it okay to stop the action to explain or describe an element of the scene to the reader? When they wouldn’t be able to visualize it otherwise, e.g. an exotic sport, a mutant creature, a completely alien landscape, etc.
Screenwriting Tip #900
screenwritingtips:
Never write timidly, like you’re apologizing for something. This is your world, your character, your story. Take control of it.

Uncomfortable Silences - Episode 1 (by Sean Mannion)
This weekend we were shooting a fake commercial for Channel 101 (which is delightful and I will share it next week). After the shoot was done I still had stuff lying around: a camera, lights, and sound equipment. I thought, let’s just shoot a very simple pilot for 101 while I have all this crap lying around.
Knowing that February is a...
